Saving Money on Grub

Leah as a baby enjoying her food

Recently a friend and I went to a cooking class called, "How to feed a family of four on $160 a month". It was a good class that really got me thinking about how I can save money on food. I have set a goal to cut out $100 a month on food. Now is the hard part: What are some cheap, easy, but still healthy things I can make? This is where I am turning to you. I want to know if you have any good recipes that:

1) Do not cost a lot to make

2) Are nutritious

3) Are easy to make

Here is one we've used a bunch of times:
Simmer a little green pepper, onion, tomato sauce and chili spices with a blend of canned beans (or for even cheaper you can cook your own beans) and serve over rice.

*For those that may be interested I took the class at Orson Gygi in Salt Lake. They are offering another one in February. It is $45 for a 3 hour class full of information and cooking.

My husband loves this because it is not kraft mac and cheese. 1. cook a pack of elbow macaroni 2. in a 9x13 pan stir some campbells cheddar cheese soup with one egg and about 1/2 cup of milk 3. stir in the cooked macaroni and then add as much cheese as you think your family would like.

Hams at costco are pretty cost effective. I sometime put one in for Sunday and then the next day I 1. cut up the leftover ham 2. 3 cans of great northern white beans 3. 1-2 cans of water 4. put all together and serve with green onion or vinegar . very yummy my kids call it diniver soup.

Taco soup. 1. Brown some hamburger with taco seasoning 2. in a crock put 2 cans of stewed tomatoes 3. 2 cans of kidney beans 4. 1 can of corn (none of this drained) 5. add the hamburger and serve with chips and sour cream yummy. I like to put this on in the morning so I don't have to cook at night.

Try Breakfast for Dinner - that's pretty cheep! You can do Pacakes or french toast.
