What a nice daddy!
I never do this with my kids. Trent is a lot nicer than I. Do you think he could do that with 3 kids? I guess we'll find out soon enough. I find out if we are having a boy or a girl on the 9th. What do you think it will be?

Saving Money on Grub
Leah as a baby enjoying her foodRecently a friend and I went to a cooking class called, "How to feed a family of four on $160 a month". It was a good class that really got me thinking about how I can save money on food. I have set a goal to cut out $100 a month on food. Now is the hard part: What are some cheap, easy, but still healthy things I can make? This is where I am turning to you. I want to know if you have any good recipes that:
1) Do not cost a lot to make
2) Are nutritious
3) Are easy to make
Here is one we've used a bunch of times:
Simmer a little green pepper, onion, tomato sauce and chili spices with a blend of canned beans (or for even cheaper you can cook your own beans) and serve over rice.
*For those that may be interested I took the class at Orson Gygi in Salt Lake. They are offering another one in February. It is $45 for a 3 hour class full of information and cooking.

Embarrassing but true
My friend Melinda (I wish you could read her blog because it is funny) did a post where she put 5 embarrassing but true stories about herself. She tagged everyone that read it to put it on their blogs. I gave it some thought and I have come up with my 5. Some of these I really am not that excited to share, but who cares right?
*UPDATE: I just realized that she only did 3 on her blog. I thought it was 5. so- you can stop at three or go for five*
1- In Junior High (I think it was 8th grade) I had to go to the bathroom REALLY bad. When school was over I ran to the bathroom and found a long line of girls waiting for a stall. I tried everything to contain it, but I had no control I swear! I peed my pants right there in front of the girl's bathroom. I carpooled with some boys, so I sat on my binder in the back of the van hoping no one would notice. I have no idea if they did or not, but they didn't say anything if they did know.
2- My Aunt drove an Isuzu Rodeo. It was stick shift. I had never learned stick. We were out on my Grandpa's farm and my brothers were in the car with us when she decided to teach me how to drive stick. Let's just say it didn't go too well. She started me out in reverse and I got the gas and brake mixed up. I crossed a highway and crashed into a fence. Good times. Not really. My brothers of course thought it was hysterical. We got back to my Grandpa's and I went downstairs in his dark basement and put a blanket over my head in shame :). I do not drive stick to this day.
3- Growing up we had people come to our house to clean and do the laundry. When I was about 14 I woke up and got in the shower to get ready for school. I was feeling really sick, like I was going to faint, so I got out and just put my robe on and went back to bed. I awoke the next morning and Fernando had come into my room and had gotten my dirty clothes for his mom. Problem was my robe had come undone and it was wide open for anyone to see. I was mortified. I told my mom (she can be really understanding :). Yes that was meant to be sarcastic). Her response was "Poor Fernando. He is such a good boy. You probably traumatized him" Fernando was probably about 18 or so at the time. Well a few months later my mom asked Fernando to tutor me in Spanish. I had to sit down and talk to him after he had seen me naked. I still consider it child abuse.
Let me just say before I go on to the last two that writing all of these are actually pretty hard to write and admit to people. Ok. Ok. On to my last two...
4- I was at work late one night and I needed to make some copies. I was in the copy room all alone thinking no one was really around. I needed to let out some gas if you know what I mean and right after I did the CEO walked in. Just in time to know what I had just done. She didn't say anything, but I wanted to die.
5- When I was in labor with Connor at the hospital the nurse that was assigned to me was someone I went to high school with. Some of you may think, "How is that an embarrassing moment?" Maybe I will need to get a little graphic with you then. When you are in labor the nurse has to "check" you. This involves feeling inside of you to see how far you are progressing. I would say it was a little awkward. I actually saw her at Albertson's the other day and totally pretended like I had no idea who she was.

Christmas Fun
Wow it has been awhile since we have blogged. We had a great Christmas. Here are a few of the things we did.
Leah was excited to get a pink Care Bear. She loves her "Bear Bears"
Here we are with Santa. We are really cheap, so each year we visit Santa at RC Willey and get our free photo with him. Leah was pretty freaked out of Santa. She wouldn't move when she saw him and she refused to sit on the old man's lap.
Connor's Preschool went and sang at a community Hospital. It was really cute. He was very serious about it. If you can't tell he is the one with the red vest.
Connor loves Preschool and he has the sweetest teacher.
This is our Elf on the Shelf. My Aunt Gayla gave this to my kids early in December and it was the BEST thing. We LOVED it! If you don't have this and you have kids you have to get it. It is a book about an elf that lives with you and every night flies back to Santa and tells him if you have been bad or good. So- each morning the kids would wake up and find their elf in a different place. Connor named his elf Steven. We have no idea why he chose that name. Having an elf was a great threatening tool :) when our kids weren't being on their best behavior. We would tell them "I'm going to tell Steven" or "Steven is watching you". It worked really well. One day after church Connor told Steven that Leah wasn't very good in Sacrament Meeting. We also caught Connor whispering to Steven "Tell Santa I want a Spiderman skateboard."

Christmas Tag
I have been tagged by my friend Christa to do this Christmas post.
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
I am a little odd because I actually LOVE wrapping gifts. I think it is fun to be creative with different papers and ribbons.
2. Real tree or artificial?
Real trees smell great! But, I like cheap and low maintenence. So- we have a fake tree that cost us like 25 bucks at Target a couple of years ago and it also came with a wreath!
3. When do you put up the tree?
Thanksgiving weekend. I love Christmas.
4. When do you take the tree down?
New Years Day.
5. Do you like egg nog?
I haven't given it much of a chance, but no, I think it is gross.
6. Favorite gift received as a child.
This one is hard. We always had really nice Christmas' growing up. I remember one year I got a stereo I really wanted. I was probably 8? We have had some good ones as adults, too :).
7. Hardest person to buy for.
Boyd (my dad- for those that don't know, we tend to call him by his first name. We are kind of disrespectful that way :))
8. Easiest person to buy for.
My kids. It is so nice that they are young and happy with anything. I hope that they will always be that way. ( I know- wishful thinking).
9. Do you have a nativity scene?
Yes. It is all white and has a stable that plays music. I love it. I earned each piece of it as a child in Primary.
10. Mail or e-mail Christmas cards?
I hope I don't offend anyone here, but I am against the e-mail cards. I hope people always mail their cards. Just recycle them if you are concerned about the enviornment. I love getting Christmas cards and seeing what people are up to.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received.
Luckily I can't think of one. I am glad I can't because I think I would just sound like an ungrateful brat.
12. Favorite Christmas movie.
The Christmas Story is a classic. But, I am going to have to go with Christmas Vacation on this one. I love that movie.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
I have been known to start before Thanksgiving.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Probably- I did it with a few wedding gifts.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas.
I love to eat my Grandma Calder's sugar cookies. She isn't alive anymore so now I have to make them. They really are a labor of love. I have a new appreciation for all the cooking she did for us.
16. Lights on the tree.
Yes. No lights outside this year though.
17. Favorite Christmas song.
I know I am going to get laughed at for this one. But really I don't care. I am who I am. (I really am laughing while writing this. I can't believe I am announcing this) Confession: I LOVE George Michael. I do. I love the Christmas song "Last Christmas". I also LOVE The Carpenters. They remind me of my Grandpa Black. I enjoy their Christmas music, too.
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
We go to our parents houses and stay home.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?
Dasher, Prancer, Donner, Blixen, Cupid, Rudolph. Are any of those even reindeer names? Will someone who knows please comment and tell me the names? Now it is going to bug me!
20. Angel on the tree top or star?
Neither. We have a little Santa in an airplane that flies around the tree.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
We open gifts Christmas Eve at Trent's mom's and my fam's Christmas morning. My kids open their Santa gifts Christmas morning. This year I want to start a new pair of pajamas traditon. So - they will get those Christmas Eve.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of year.
The snow. I HATE it. I know hate is a strong word, but that is the only appropriate word to describe it.

None. That seems a little over the top.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?
Chicken Cordon Bleu.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year?
Nothing in particular. Just for my kids (and Trent and I) not to get sick for the Holidays.

It's a Christmas Miracle!
On Friday night the Chipotle by us was offering free burritos if you brought a toy in to donate. How could we pass up a tasty Chipotle burrito? And did I mention it was free?! Don't worry we didn't take two dollar store toys that were suppose to go in our kids stockings. We wouldn't stoop that low for a burrito. No way.
We walked out of there with two chicken fajita burritos and they gave our kids quesadillas for free. A free meal. A Christmas miracle- especially in this great economy.
Don't worry you didn't completely miss out on this great deal.
